Self Help: How to Overcome Depression
Depression is a health disorder that affects primarily one’s mental faculties. Cases of depression can fall anywhere between mild to severe. In complex cases, it can severely affect one’s bodily, social, and emotional condition. If remained undiagnosed and untreated, sufferers can stay in depressive states their whole lifetime.
The sooner this health problem is diagnosed (in patients) and treated, the greater the chance for (their) full recovery. Though many cases of depression may require a patient’s dependency on a particular treatment method, full recovery can be achieved and maintained for as long as treatments are followed with regularity and continuity.
If you think you are suffering from depression (or if you are already certain of it), it is of utmost importance that you immediately and appropriately address this problem. In order to overcome depression, there are four important things you must consider and evaluate:
Firstly, fully ascertain whether you are indeed suffering from a form of depression. If you (or any family member and friend) notice something other than the ordinary, then you may be in its initial stages. You may do an initial self assessment; however, should you believe that you are suffering from depression you are advised to consult a medical doctor immediately. Following are some of the more common signs of depression:
1. Loss of interest in home and/or work life.
2. Excessive crying with feelings of sadness and emptiness.
3. Loss of energy and decreasing activity levels.
4. Abnormal weight gain and/or weight loss. This is related with a decreasing or increasing appetite.
5. Oversleeping and/or Insomnia.
6. Feelings of helplessness and/or hopelessness which often lead to thoughts of suicide.
7. Mood swings, unstable emotional disposition.
8. Persisting and debilitating headaches.
9. Unexplained digestive disorders and/or chronic pain.
10. Mental handicap, indecisiveness.
Secondly, know what kind of depressive disorder you have. Depression falls into 3 most common categories:
1. Major Depression.
Major depression exhibits a lot of symptoms which when felt, prevents a person from living a normal life. A person suffering from major depression may suddenly be unable to continue with work and even with his (or her) normal daily routines. The person may be unable to sleep, eat, and enjoy hobbies. Patients who fall in this type commonly suffer from major episodes of depression.
2. Disthymia.
This is not as severe as Major Depression. There are lesser symptoms so one can usually go about normal daily activities. However, persons are unable to function and feel well. This type usually lasts a long time with persons possibly suffering from a major episode (or more) of depression at some point in their life.
3. Bipolar Disorder (Manic Depression)
This is less common than the first two. A manic depressive suffers from complex cycles of mood swings whereby periods of highs follow periods of lows. In a depressive state, a person suffers from symptoms of depression while in a manic stage, a person experiences heightened levels of energy. Patients in manic stage often become overly talkative and overly active. Mania must be treated promptly else, patients may become psychotic, unable to perceive reality.
Now that you know which category your problem falls into, the third thing you need to know is to find out what is causing (or triggering) your bouts with depression. There are many factors that cause depression in people. The most common causes are outlined below:
1. Diagnosis of a serious or life threatening disease personally or in the family.
2. Death in the family.
3. Sudden change in one’s home, social, and/or work life. Giving birth, divorce, retirement, and other job changes are known causes of depression.
4. Medical history of depression in the family. Depression can also be a genetic condition which can pass down through generations.
5. Serious or unresolved conflicts at home and/or at work.
6. Emotional, physical, and/or sexual abuse.
7. Addiction to vices such as alcohol and prohibited drugs.
8. Effects of withdrawal from vices such as alcohol, smoking, and prohibited drugs.
9. A Chemical imbalance in one’s body.
10. Adverse side effect from taking certain medications.
Friends and families of people who undergo any of the above should see to it that their loved ones are supported throughout these challenging times. Often, a good shoulder to cry on and a helping hand are the best defense of people against depression.
Now that all first three have been fully determined, the fourth most important thing to focus one’s attention onto is available avenues for support and various recommended treatment courses for those suffering from depression. There are many ways people can be helped to cope with and to overcome depression but before commencing with any method, it is wise to have an initial consultation with a medical doctor who is expert in the study and practice of treating clinical depression.
You may be advised to undergo some laboratory testing and preliminary counseling sessions, after which you may end with a final consultation meeting. There, you will be given all the advice you would need in order to deal with your problem. In more complex situations however, you may be referred to another doctor or clinic.
Following are ways you can deal with depression.
1. Psychotherapy.
Patients are given regular appointments where patients meet with their respective doctors, therapists, or psychiatrists. Through these sessions they are able to discover deep seated causes of their depression and consequently deal with such. Effective psychotherapy sessions may last from 2 to 6 months.
2. Prescription medicines.
Doctors often prescribe medicines which help control depression. These prescriptions are called antidepressants. They help remedy chemical imbalances in a patient’s brain. Patients reported improvement in as early as one week. Not all antidepressants work for everyone so it’s important to find the kind that will be effective for you. Observe adverse side effects on the first week of your intake. Stop taking them if that happens. Antidepressants may be prescribed from three to six months. Other times, dosage is reduced but need to be taken for a lifetime.
3. Hospital confinement.
Those who struggle with thoughts of suicide often need hospital confinement. Also, other patients with serious medical conditions need proper care in the hospital since they are unable to care for themselves.
4. Listening to motivational speakers.
Motivational speakers are experts in their respective fields. They do well in motivating people to improve their lives. Through their special talents they are able to push people beyond their ‘perceived limits’ and do things they never felt they were able to do before. However, not all motivational speakers are good with what they do. It is very important that you attend sessions of effective motivational speakers else, you’ll only be wasting your time and money. Unfortunately, you may even feel worse afterwards than before you attended.
Things to remember when looking for motivational speakers:
a. Check expertise and experience. Real professionals flaunt their complete credentials.
b. Check and interview past and current clientele. At times, they leave client references. If you can, talk with these people in order to get a firsthand testimony about their experience with these motivational speakers.
c. Find out if they are good at putting their formal education into practice. Normally, motivational speakers fall in either of these two categories:
While therapy may help you deal with depression by uncovering clues from the past, personal coaching helps you deal with depression by discovering yourself and your capabilities at present. Through personal coaching recovering patients are able to set achievable goals step by step, also, to protect and maintain personal successes over depression. Through these sessions, you will be able to reclaim your life a piece at a time, an area at a time.
Coaching sessions can be done by phone. Calls are made at regularly spaced intervals in a month and may be 30 minutes long (or longer) for each call. Coaching can also be reinforced by written or internet correspondence. Sessions provide for encouragement, accountability, guidance, inspiration, refocus, validation, and support. They may be commenced anytime and may be ended anytime. Personal coaching can go on for a few sessions in a month, in a year, or in a lifetime.
